Youth Fitness for Parents: Creating Competency with Brand X® Movement Skills

In our last segment we spoke about the three elements a trainer can influence to increase physical literacy.  In this blog we are going to talk about the third element, movement competence and how your coach works to increase this.  Brand X® Coaches will first  influence this element by focusing on developing mastery.

You have probably seen your Brand X® coach drilling a specific part of a movement and wondered what they are doing.  They are most likely, working on Brand X® Movement Skills which are pieces and parts of more complex movements. These pieces and parts are critical to competently reproducing a whole movement. They may also be applied as global strategies for a variety of movements.

You can think of Movement Skills like the scaffolding the structure is built upon. Without a solid underlying framework the structure is at higher risk. Brand X® always works to optimize What is Best for Kids™, and creating a stronger structure is one way to accomplish this.

As an example, take the “Waiting in the Outfield” position.   This is the Brand X® Movement Skill that teaches kids to hinge at the hips rather than bend in the lower back.  This is crucial to being able to do something like pick things up off the ground safely. Of course, it also critically important to squatting, jumping and a multitude of other athletic endeavors.

As you can see, Movement Skills form the base of sound movement.  Children who master them can find success, confidence and more joy in movement, as well as move closer to meeting their full potential in whatever sports or activity’s they choose to pursue.
